I Need More Love

Jam w/Clapton

Pollstar Article (5/20/10)

This record is a celebration of African-American music over the past one hundred years and its social messages from the last thirty. Although we cover a whole timeline of different eras on We Walk This Road, what ties these songs together remain their message of hope, their ability to uplift.

After we finished our last record, Colorblind, we began searching for a great producer to help guide the follow up. We wanted someone who understood me and the road I’ve walked this far, who understood our connections of my roots within rock and gospel and the church, who would help us put those things in their most compelling context.

T Bone Burnett shared the vision of how gospel, blues and rock could be put together in a way that could relate to my history and connect to my present. It was important to us that we make the record we wanted to make, even if the end result was unclassifiable. We just focused on making great songs and great music that spoke to me, and that reflected the way I try to speak to the world

We recorded We Walk This Road over about two years, after T Bone had finished his record with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant. We went into the studio with virtual libraries of songs, whole volumes worth of material to go through. T Bone brought in old archival songs from the twenties and thirties and many of them were in the public domain. I had songs that I had written with the band, or that other artists had sent me, and we sat down and starting sifting through history.

When we found something we liked, we would either cover it or re-work it using our own words or melodies. Through this creation came an education. T Bone opened a lot of doors for me serving as a link between the past and the present. He knows how to take something from the past and bring it into the present while still allowing the artist to make it his own, in the same way that Hendrix took Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” and made it belong to him.

T Bone listens to music that our grandmothers would listen to as children–not even music that our fathers listened to, but songs that go even further back…some from Gospel and Christian blues, the music that people working in fields across the south likely sang nearly a century ago. Those are the real roots of rock and roll, where everything else comes from.
I was only allowed to listen to modern Christian and gospel music growing up, so there was so much I didn’t know about. My mind is expanded now. The record is finished and I still feel as if I’m not done. I’ve spent over $5,000 on iTunes in the past eighteen months just catching up. Before this record, I didn’t sift through music past the Seventies. I didn’t know about Blind Willie Johnson, or Chess Records. I thank T Bone for being a tour guide into the deepest parts of my musical roots.

We connected the last one hundred years of African-American music in the way people used to: You write your own songs, you cover other people’s material, you re-work older songs. We had some amazing people come in to help. Leon Russell came by to hang out and wound up playing piano on the last track, “Salvation.” Ben Harper plays guitar and sings on “If I Had My Way.” The base of that song came from Blind Willie Johnson, and it was really difficult to get right. It was a country tune for a while. I had honestly given up on it. But Ben came down and said, “Let me get in there! I know just what to do!” He went in there and smoked the choruses, and I thought, “Now we’ve got a tune.”  It’s one of my favorite songs on the record.

Where We’ve Been
I grew up in the House of God church. The pedal steel was a big part of our church tradition. I grew up watching older guys play, and I started playing when I was fifteen. When I was nineteen, someone gave me tickets to a Stevie Ray Vaughan concert. After that, I wanted to play pedal steel like Stevie Ray played his guitar. I wanted to take another path than the people who played traditional pedal steel to take it to a whole new level.

We started playing and touring around New York City in 2000, playing clubs like Wetlands, and things started to take off. We were selling out large New York clubs with no record deal, and it started to spread to Philly and Boston. Soon, we signed to Warner Brothers, and word began to get around about us nationally. Great artists like Eric Clapton and Dave Matthews and B.B. King accepted us. Young artists, too: we toured with the Roots and Pharrell and John Mayer. We have been fortunate to be accepted by a wide range of fan bases, and we have been able to build from there. I definitely feel as if everything has been working up to this moment, to this record.

Where We’re Going
I’m very excited to play these tracks live. Those people who have been our fans and followers should see the progression from our last record to this one, and the road we’ve taken won’t seem too foreign to them. When people come to see us, they know that it’s really about the message, about making them feel good. Hopefully, this record will inspire them in the same way. It certainly makes me feel happy. I can’t see myself recording depressing lyrics, lyrics that leave people without a sense of hope. It’s not in me to use the power of the microphone to make music like that. That’s why this record is uplifting - it’s got great messages. It’s all there.

My goal is to open the door for people, in the same way that musical doors have been opened for me. I want to take this musical history and make it relevant to give people a better idea of who I am and where I came from. I think even though I’m a young guy who was born into the era of hip-hop and contemporary gospel, I can help bridge the cultural gap between people who are seventy-five years old and kids who are fifteen years old by reaching back into this history of music.

We Walk This Road was done in our belief in what we all need right now: young voices saying something positive without preaching in hopes of inspiring people. When you stick to what you believe in, and with the roots of where you come from, things will always work out.

Frankie's Gun

The Felice Brothers got their start as a band playing in the New York City subway, but their musical experience started much earlier. The sons of a carpenter, they would play together on Sundays at their father's afternoon barbecues. They stayed in a little apartment in Brooklyn and would play in the subway stations at 42nd Street and Union Square and in Greenwich Village. The three brothers originally hail from Palenville, NY in the Catskill Mountains.

Now they tour the country, traveling in their "Short Bus". They went to England in the summer of 2007 to play a handful of shows. Alongside manager, Paul Schiavo, the band worked hard to release their debut album Through These Reins and Gone in 2006 which started the rumblings around the music world. In 2007, Schiavo negotiated the band's first record deal with Loose Music in Europe. The momentum was now strong and had paved the way for a solid touring schedule and a growing fan base. Through These Reins and Gone made it onto Radio Woodstock WDST's top 25 albums of 2006. About their album Adventures of the Felice Brothers Vol. 1 James Felice said, "We put one record out on an English label, and we've released all the other stuff ourselves" (on their label 'New York Pro'). The Felice Brothers have played at Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble in Woodstock, NY and also toured with Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band last fall.

Got My Groove On, Part 1

Like a Super Nova burning bright in the night sky comes Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. Based out of San Diego, KDTU began its journey in 1998 after bandleader Karl Denson decided to change gears five years after he'd help create The Greyboy Allstars. GBA had proven themselves as the ultimate party band, spreading their "West Coast Boogaloo" style all over the world, making "Jazz" a dance term once again. Karl set out to take this formula to the next level by putting more emphasis on vocals and adding some funk, r&b and hip hop elements. It turned out to be a winning combination which set KDTU on the top of the heap in the touring world from 1999 through 2005. In 2005 Karl decided to get back to his roots and work in a smaller jazzier setting. During 2006 and 2007 Karl led KD3, a trio configuration featuring Sax, Organ and Drums. This led to the 2007 release of KD3's "Lunar Orbit", an album which was a great critical success. In 2008, Karl rejoined his former boss Lenny Kravitz and spent the year country hopping through Europe and North America. In 2009 Karl went back into the studio and conjured up what is being hailed as the most soulful KDTU adventure yet, "Brother's Keeper" which was released Sept 15th, 2009.

Beautiful Now

When Columbia Records released Songs from Stamford Hill in 2000 it looked like James Maddock was destined for stardom. All the benchmarks of burgeoning success were there; a top 5 Triple A radio song, prominent placements in TV/Film, inclusion on the first Dawson’s Creek compilation, and extensive touring with the likes of Paula Cole and Train. Although James created a small base of rabid fans, he didn’t achieve the wide recognition he deserved. One of the burning questions in the music business over the last few years has been, “Whatever happened to James Maddock and Wood and why didn’t he ever make another record”?

The story of James Maddock over the last 10 years has been one of pain and persistence. The brass ring was within his grasp. He relocated to the U.S., got married, and made another record for Columbia. And then it all fell apart. His personal and professional life unraveled at a rapid pace. He found himself in a new country, divorced, and to add to the insult, Columbia decided to not release the follow-up to Songs from Stamford Hill. James was unceremoniously dropped from the label. A lesser man would have been broken by the experience, but James rallied on amid the ruins.

What James now has to show for the detour from major label to the present, is an extraordinary set of songs embodied in his new album Sunrise on Avenue C. In the age of the track, James has made a real album with a beginning and an end. Vin Scelsa of WFUV and Sirius/XM puts it this way; “I fell head over heels in love with James Maddock's music around the turn of the century when his band Wood released Songs From Stamford Hill. My heart broke when James seemed to disappear completely from the music scene without a follow-up. From time to time I would search for him on the Internet, to no avail, and play the songs from Wood's only album with a bittersweet ache that matched the mood of the music. Imagine then how thrilled I was to discover at the end of the decade James was living and working right under my nose in New York City, far below the radar, honing his skills, biding his time. Then understand how exhilarated and thoroughly gladdened I became upon hearing his new songs, heartbreakingly beautiful, exquisitely crafted, which pick right up where Stamford Hill left off. James Maddock's talent has a timeless quality he shares with the great songwriters. His music touches the soul. How happy I am to have him back on the radar screen ... the world at large needs artists like this.”

Technobeam

The New Deal is a high energy three-piece live electronic band from Canada. With a drummer (Darren Shearer), bass guitarist (Dan Kurtz, now playing with Dragonette), and keyboard player (Jamie Shields), the music incorporates many elements of modern electronica, which they have branded live progressive breakbeat house.

The band formed in 1998 after a friendly, impromptu jam session they had at the Toronto venue the Comfort Zone. Upon listening to a recording of the show, they were transfixed by how much it sounded like a DJ mix. They subsequently released the jam session as their first album, This Is Live.

The band was without a name prior to the release of This Is Live. Jamie Shields, whose previous band One Step Beyond had wrapped up recently, indicated that the band hadn't settled on a name. At one point, they were calling themselves "Reprise". The New Deal stuck shortly afterwards.

Originally billing themselves as an acid jazz group, they soon found themselves swept up into the emerging musical genre of livetronica. The drumming of Shearer often resembles the simplicity of a drum machine, while still tastefully complementing the accompanying music. Interestingly, Shields never loops a keyboard track and always plays everything live, even if a pattern is to be repeated. Thanks to the widespread sharing of bootleg versions of their early live shows, a national buzz ensued and within two years, and they signed a major label contract with Jive Electro.

The promotion with Jive proved disappointing, and the band fell short of a highly-anticipated crossover. None the less, they continued to tour, developing their fanbase. They released several more live shows on a label they created, Sound+Light Records, and produced two studio releases in 2003: Please Be Seated and Gone Gone Gone. In 2004, after a year-long hiatus, The New Deal toured several cities, often playing to crowds of 800 or more demonstrating the continued devotion of their fans.

The band continued to tour, and over 200 recored shows have been made available at the Internet Archive and etree for downloading. In recent years, seeing the band live has been difficult as concerts have become sporadic. Only a few recent concerts have been made available because of difficulties accommodating "tapers" and obtaining soundboard recordings.

Shadows With The Lonely

The daughter of a professor of English, and the ”musical one” of seven children (others include a nuclear physicist, a comedian, a photographer, and a couple of authors), Maura Kennedy carved out her moments of teenage creative solitude sequestered in a closet, blasting Queen and Kate Bush on headphones, while she read C.S. Lewis and Stephen R. Donaldson. Not given to the hermitic life, she made nocturnal escapes, crawling out of her bedroom window and across the roof of her family’s suburban split-level home, to hit the streets of post-industrial Syracuse, New York, in search of crunching power chords and soaring pop hooks.

She found them—and was always the first on the dance floor—in small clubs where R.E.M. and Squeeze were scrounging gas money for the road, and especially at a dusty used record shop, where she got a job just to spin vinyl all day. She soaked up the Kinks, the Hollies, the Raspberries, and leavened the sweetness with a strong dose of Thompson/Denny era Fairport Convention. In the stainless steel splendor of the Little Gem Diner, the Ramones autographed her Social Security Card. At college, she pawned her meal tickets to buy an amp and lived off of her bandmate’s doggie bags. She cracked a couple of ribs in the mosh pit at a Clash show and finally got the music degree. After spending the night in an upstate Greyhound station when she missed the last bus following a Cheap Trick concert, she and some like-minded friends formed a combo and blazed a trail through the Syracuse club scene. And with the breeze off Onondaga Lake at her back, she took off for Austin.

It was in Austin that she made her bones, and it was there that her stage persona came together: always rocking, always “in the zone,” and always full-on energy. It was also in Austin that she hooked up with Nanci Griffith, and toured the US and the British Isles behind Nanci’s Grammy-winning Other Voices, Other Rooms. Working the road in the acoustic format of roots-pop mavens The Kennedys, her songwriting blossomed, as she began drawing from novels, poetry, and especially from her own dreams.

From Largo in L.A. to the Borderline in London, it’s always come back to pop music, with an ever-maturing darker underlay, and for Maura, the road has always led back to New York City. She’s lived in a number of tenements around St. Mark’s Place, many of them hastily converted into makeshift recording studios, and it was in that neighborhood that she conceived the idea of writing a song, and making a master-quality recording, every month for thirteen months. The resultant compilation would be a sort of melodic journal of her emotional seasons. While keeping up a busy schedule of shows and acting gigs, she finished the project in the autumn of 2009.

PARADE OF ECHOES delivers on the power chords and the hooks, but it’s no concoction of pop cotton candy. You may hear traces of her love of Brill Building sheen, but lyrically, Maura doesn’t shrink from the heavy stuff; she deals with depression and obsession, and she doesn’t pray for divine intervention. Shadowy dreamscapes evoke Emily Dickinson, the ’50’s noir of Patsy Cline, and even Shakespeare’s cursed Thane of Cawdor, by way of Don and Phil Everly. “The Thing with Feathers” is dark, almost Gothic in the Victorian sense, but it ultimately powers its way through the shadow to a kind of dark hope, stronger for its admissions of weakness and doubt. “New Way to Live,” like “Some Kind of Life,” expresses a shared secret wish, the longing we all feel sometimes for what might have been, with a chorus that rolls in and out like the surf at Rockaway Beach. “Sun Burns Gold” and “October” play like intimate diary entries. “Chains” and “Just the Rain” deal with love as an uncontrollable force, drawing their pulsating energy from that deep well of power.

It’s been said that a good songwriter comforts the disturbed, and disturbs the comfortable. Maura, having mastered the craft, does both in a thirteen-song soliloquy by simply having the strength to stand strong in the face of life. Where the songs deal with emotional thunderclouds, she confronts them head on, just as she once drove straight into a line of crackling desert storm cells out on the Arizona border. The best part is, it’s all cast in the sheen of her carillon harmonies and bell-like vocal tone.

Maura is fond of quoting Joseph Campbell on the role of an artist—to break windows through the walls of culture to eternity. With PARADE OF ECHOES, on which she not only sings, but plays most of the instruments and produces and engineers, she breaks down walls, and the result is a masterwork that will inspire and empower a legion of listeners—and maybe get them on their feet to dance, too.

Prisoner

The Persecution & Restoration of Dean Moriarty

In 1972, Aztec Two-Step, whose name comes from a poem by beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, burst upon the scene with their self-titled debut album on Elektra Records. Since then Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman have spent a lifetime making music together as the folk/rock duo Aztec Two-Step. Their first album, along with their subsequent albums for RCA Records were staples of progressive FM and college radio and helped to bring the music of the 1960s into the 70s.

As their recording career continued, so did the critical acclaim. In 1987 Living in America, received the New York Music Award for Best Folk Album and was named in Billboard’s year-end critic’s poll. They have been praised in countless major US newspapers and magazines, including Rolling Stone, and have appeared on numerous TV and radio shows, such as the David Letterman Show, the King Biscuit Flour Hour, and World Café Live. In 1999 they were the subjects of the documentary, No Hit Wonder, which was aired on PBS.

Of their 2005 release, Days of Horses,” the Boston Globe said “fans of the duo’s harmony-driven tunes and easygoing acoustic guitar riffs will recognize their James Taylor-meets-Simon & Garfunkel sound. What’s new is the mood. This album sits back on its haunches as Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman look back wistfully at American pop culture and their own ride through it.”

2007 saw several hallmark events for the duo. In June, Aztec Two-Step performed “The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty (On The Road)” at a very special Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Festival as the author’s hometown marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of On The Road. Also In June 2007, Real Simple, a popular national lifestyle magazine, named Aztec Two-Step one of the top five classic folk albums joining work by Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Tom Rush and Phil Ochs. The article cites the duo as “surpass[ing] Simon and Garfunkel for exquisite harmonies, musicianship and emotion.”

Rhino Records released Forever Changing-The Golden Age of Elektra Records 1963-1973, a five-CD box set that tells the story of this landmark record label and the music that defined an era. The collection includes Aztec Two-Step’s “The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty (On The Road).”

Live at TCAN, a new DVD was released, featuring a 35th anniversary concert at The Center for Arts in Natick, Massachusetts, a performance of the self-titled debut album in its entirety, plus other fan-favorites from Aztec Two-Step’s long and distinguished career. The DVD also includes interviews with Rex Fowler, Neal Shulman and longtime Aztec Two-Step bassist Fred Holman, as well as comments recorded on the Aztec Two-Step “fan-cam.”

Aztec Two-Step continues to impress audiences with intelligent songwriting, dazzling acoustic lead guitar, and inspiring harmonies. They are one of acoustic music’s most popular and enduring acts.

Love is Our Cross To Bear

Godfrey Daniels is one of the oldest and most venerable music institutions in eastern Pennsylvania. A small neighborhood coffeehouse and listening room, it has long been a hangout for music lovers and aspiring musicians, and in the late 1970s, one of these was a young Moravian College student named John Gorka. Though his academic course work lay in Philosophy and History, music began to offer paramount enticements. Soon he found himself living in the club’s basement and acting as resident M.C. and soundman, encountering legendary folk troubadors like Canadian singer/songwriter Stan Rogers, Eric Andersen, Tom Paxton and Claudia Schmidt. Their brand of folk-inspired acoustic music inspired him, and before long he was performing his own songs — mostly as an opener for visiting acts. Soon he started traveling to New York City, where Jack Hardy’s legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer/songwriter) became a powerful source of education and encouragement. Folk meccas like Texas’ Kerrville Folk Festival (where he won the New Folk Award in 1984) and Boston followed, and his stunningly soulful baritone voice and emerging songwriting began turning heads. Those who had at one time inspired him — Suzanne Vega, Bill Morrissey, Nanci Griffith, Christine Lavin, Shawn Colvin — had become his peers.

In 1987, the young Minnesota-based Red House Records caught wind of John’s talents and released his first album , I Know , to popular and critical acclaim. With unusual drive and focus, John hit the ground running and, when an offer came from Windhan Hill’s Will Ackerman in 1989, he signed with that label’s inprint, High Street Records. He proceeded to record five albums with High Street over the next seven years: Land of the Bottom Line, Jack’s Crows, Temporary Road, Out of the Valley, and Between Five and Seven. His albums and his touring (over 150 nights a year at times) brought new accolades for his craft. Rolling Stone called him “the preeminent male singer/songwriter of the new folk movement.” His rich multi-faceted songs full of depth, beauty and emotion gained increasing attention from critics and audiences across the country, as well as in Europe where his tours led him through Italy, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Switzerland and Germany.

Other performers also discovered his songwriting. His material is championed by many — to date more than a score of artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. He also started sharing tours with many notable friends — Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter among them. All this has brought his music to an ever-widening audience. His video for the single “When She Kisses Me” found a long-term rotation on VH-1’s “Current Country,” as well as on CMT and the Nashville Network. John also graced the stage of Austin City Limits, appeared on CNN, and has been the subject of other national pro- gramming.

Finally in 1998, after five successful recordings, and seven years at Windham Hill/High Street, John felt the need for a change and decided to return to his musical roots at Red House Records. The choice was driven, in part, by the artistic integrity that the label represents in an industry where the business of music too often takes precedence. As John says, “Red House is in it first for the music, and so am I. It’s a good place to be.”

After Yesterday represents the first fruits of that reunion and reflects John’s continuing commitment to the craft of songwriting. Longtime fans will find in its twelve songs John’s trademark twist of lyric and attention to the details that so effectively evoke a time, a place, a person, or a range of emotion. But there are also the stirrings of new musical directions with the evocative addition of percussion from Ani DiFranco’s drummer Andy Stochansky. John also shares his joy at recent changes in his life (namely a 1996 marriage and move to Minnesota, followed by the 1997 birth of a baby boy — Bocephus Mahatma Sinatra Gorka) with cuts such as “Cypress Trees,” “After Yesterday” and “When He Cries.” There is a hardened knowledge, vented and voiced in “Thorny Patch” and “Wisdom.” Story songs and character studies, “Amber Lee,” “Silvertown” and “Zuly” engage the imagination, while a song like “Heroes” invites introspection.

Though a long way from Godfrey Daniels, John Gorka is still honored to be a part of the folk tradition — energetic acoustic music that is not a trend, not a fad, but an expression of everyday life. After Yesterday is the embodiment of that expression — another classic release where his rich baritone voice and unique songcraft weave together in a way that can only be described as “Gorka.”

The impact of Lynyrd Skynyrd on American rock and roll began with the harmonious blend of guitar driven rock with southern blues roots and can be heard today in the new rock music of the 21st Century. Artimus Pyle's powerful and distinctive double bass drumming helped define the legendary Skynyrd sound.

Artimus' live debut with the band took place in Jacksonville's Sgt. Pepper's Club in October 1974. The years Artimus played with Skynyrd were the years that solidified the legend behind the band with classic rock songs such as “Saturday Night Special”, “Gimme Back My Bullets”, “That Smell”, “I Know A Little” and “Freebird”. The band quickly developed into one of the nation's top touring draws with a grueling schedule of 300 shows a year. During the next few years Lynyrd Skynyrd's songs became radio staples. Their album, ‘Street Survivors’, had just been released to critical and popular acclaim. The ambitious new tour, just days underway, saw sellout crowds. On October 20, 1977, as the sun was setting in Mississippi, the chartered plane ran out of fuel and fell from the sky.

Jam in the Dam

The Bridge is a unique rock band whose music combines elements of blues and roots, spiced with funk and soul. They have recently become known coast-to-coast, and even in Europe, for their gritty and grand live performances and poignantly hand crafted albums. Following in the tradition of classic / southern roots rock, and flavoring their sound with Americana sensibilities, the band has built their own niche between the jam, country, and bluegrass genres.

The band’s roots date back to 2001, when guitarist & vocalist Cris Jacobs reunited, post college, with high school friend Kenny Liner (who’d recently returned from living in Hawaii and learning the mandolin). They found an immediate chemistry playing music together, and would go onto create The Bridge by osmosis. They played countless regional shows, working on each other’s material, experimenting with bands members and ultimately woodshedding the band until it locked into focus. Jacobs and Liner solidified the The Bridge’s core line-up with the addition of saxophonist Patrick Rainey, bassist Dave Markowitz and drummer Mike Gambone.

Philadelphia based keyboardist Mark Brown began doing shows with the band in 2008, and by the end of that year he had also become a full time member of the band, rounding out their sound with organ and piano.

After self-releasing the CD ‘Cross Street Market’ in 2005, and becoming notorious for late night residency shows at the 8×10 Club, in Baltimore, the band eventually signed to Hyena Records. A self titled CD was released on Hyena in 2007, to critical acclaim, and the band has just recently (October 2008) released another buzzed-about album, entitled “Blind Man’s Hill”.

Since their first release on Hyena Records, The Bridge has been performing all over the United States and throughout Europe, at clubs, festivals, and colleges. Among others, they have graced the stages of Allgood Festival, Wakarusa, Jamcruise, Gathering of the Vibes, Floydfest, the Capital City Carnival, moe.down, Camp Bisco, Smilefest, the Asheville Music Jamboree, the Baltimore Jazz Festival, etc. On their 2008 tour of Europe, they received rousing receptions at the Oerol Festival in The Netherlands, the Umsonst & Draussen Festival in Germany, and the Blue Ball Festival in Switzerland.

A Child Shall Lead

Bonton Roulez

Brother Joscephus and the Love Revival Revolution Orchestra is a New York-based 12-piece explosion of righteousness blending New Orleans party music, Soul in the style of Ray Charles and Al Green, a good helping of jam-bandy Roots Rock and a splash of upbeat (non-religious) Gospel into a feel-good gumbo of love. The band released its debut CD in 2009 to rave reviews.

In the band’s short history they have already made a big splash in the NYC and New Orleans music scene, sharing the stage with NOLA stalwarts such as the Rebirth Brass Band, Trombone Shorty and Bonerama, the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars and Eric Lindell.

But a Brother Joscephus show is more than just the music — there is also an emphasis on spectacle and pageantry. The band is decked out in their finest whites (accented with the appropriate gold, purple and green of Mardi Gras). They break out parasols, start each set with a parade through the audience and throw out hundreds of beads over the course of a show. When BroJo plays, it’s like every day is Mardi Gras.

"...an 11-piece band that plays secular gospel... get your head around that!" - New York Times, December 25, 2008

“Everything about this is cool, from the concept to the songs to the ATTITUDE, it's a very refreshing listen.” - Mondo Blu Podcast

In The Stone

On one of those magical Monday nights in 1985 at Canterbury Ales in Huntington a popular musicians hang featuring the Jim Pin 5 + 2 – 1 Band. A five piece horn section, with whom the rhythm section had recently been rehearsing squeezed into the jam packed club in front of the club's infamous ultra-compact fold down stage. When they punched out the last note of Tower of Power's “What is Hip,” the crowd went wild, and what was to eventually become Funk Filharmonik was born.“It all actually started out as nothing more than a rehearsal band simply for the enjoyment of playing this music,” said Lee Finkelstein.

Ozzie Melendez, the band's musical director (producer, arranger, composer of the newly released CD entitled “Everybody Get Down) and trombone player approached the band's former tenor sax player Alex Stewart with the idea of a band that could genuinely duplicate the sounds of Earth Wind and Fire and Tower of Power. They presented the idea to drummer Lee Finkelstein and bassist Rich Ebler of the Jim Pin Band. As it turned out, Lee and Rich had visions of the same band for years. An immediate alliance was formed. “I was so excited,” recounts Ozzie, “that I went home, and the very next day started transcribing six of my favorite Tower of Power tunes

When Gary Smith, of The Brokerage Pub and long time pillar of Long Island's live music scene heard the line up of this band, he booked them sight unseen, without a demo tape. Many of Funk's members had performed regularly at The Brokerage and Gary knew the caliber of musicians he was dealing with.

Funk Philharmonia (as they were originally called) first gig was on November 21st 1985. Since that first gig, there have been surprisingly few changes in the band's line up, especially for a group of this size.

Funk Filharmonik's big, fat, fiery horn sound and chunky rhythmic vibe has become a magnet for musicians and music lovers of all stripes, from jazz hipsters to rockin' bikers, from students to teachers, youngsters to oldsters, fans of jazz, funk, soul, R & B, listeners, dancers, to some of the most well know musicians in the NY Metropolitan area.

Funk Filharmonik has influenced many other local bands and fueled the resurgence of horn bands on L.I.  Their performances have become a local hang for so many players. One never knows who is in the audience and might come up to sit in with the band, particularly when they gig in Manhattan. The band does, after all, feature some of Long Island's hottest and most in demand players. Collectively, they've recorded and  continue to perform with the icons of popular music, including Ray Charles, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Tower of Power, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, Blues Brothers, Aretha Franklin, John Mayer, Bootsy Collins, Steve Cropper, Shaggy, the Winans, Mariah Carey, The Allman Brothers, John Oates, Eddie Floyd, Huey Lewis, Michael Bolton, Queen Latifah, and so many more.

Some of Funk Fil’s members have also played and recorded and continue to play with jazz and Latin giants including Tito Puente, Willie Colon, Freddie Hubbard, Jonathan Butler, Marc Anthony, Lionel Hampton, Jennifer Lopez, the Brecker Brothers, and a list that goes on and on. Their talents have added to countless TV and Broadway shows, and commercial jingles. At any given moment, these guys might be off performing as a band, as a horn section, or individual players in the far corners of the world playing in such diverse settings as presidential inaugurations, midnight sun concerts in Sweden's Arctic Circle, or spiritual drum and dance ceremonies of Ghana, West Africa. Funk Filharmonik also prides itself in the many benefits they and their loyal following of funksters have supported for humanitarian and environmental causes.

Miles to Dayton is a band that wants to get to know you. With a well-crafted mix of folk, rock, classical and funk, this Long Island based ensemble brings an honest message of love, life and laughter to each performance. The M2D recipe is simple: four-part vocal harmony textures, solid songwriting, improvisational violin and cello, and an infectious rhythm section that stirs up the creative stew. The family chemistry adds to the onstage fun, while the unique instrumentation truly delivers an eclectic sound portrait, with a comfortable, down-home vibe in all of the songs and presentation. Miles to Dayton will leave a lasting impression on your ears, relying on quality musicianship and a melody that will carry you back to the next show.

The band features the talents of vocalist Krista (March) Preddice, often compared to the likes of Natalie Merchant and Dolores O'Riordan.  Accomplished songwriter Jonathan Preddice also shares lead vocal duty, and plays guitar and cello in the band.  Dave March adds to the package by delivering pocket bass lines and heartfelt vocals.  Violinist Leanne (Preddice) Strom wields her violin with extreme presence and maturity, using her classical upbringing to add many interesting colors  and textures to the m2d ensemble.  Newcomer drummer Brian Kroll has only elevated this family band to new heights, providing an exciting and funky edge to the overall sound, while lifting the songs up on a pedestal for all to enjoy.  With the successful release of two independent full length albums in the past five years, "A long way back" (2005) and "Rise" (2007), Miles to Dayton has developed a strong regional following.  With a newly bolstered lineup, the band has set it sights on releasing a third album in 2010 that will promises to be it's finest work to date.

M2D has maintained a busy performance schedule in the Northeast, with notable performances at legendary venues such as The Stephen Talkhouse, The Patchogue Theater Mainstage, The Knitting Factory, Acoustic Long Island, Arlene’s Grocery, Eastenders Coffee House, and The Canal Room, as well as participating in the Millennium Music Conference, Meany Fest, the Great South Bay Music Festival and the Patchogue Folk Festival.

That's Why I'm Crying

The Fountain of Blues has been around for a good couple of years. Judy Buchman, a veteran professional singer, (blues, jazz, show tunes, classical) returned to live in NYC after spending many years in Tel Aviv, Israel, and after having survived the suicide bombing at Mike’s place, a popular Tel Aviv blues bar where she performed regularly at the jam (see www.bluesbythebeachfilm.com). Judy sought a blues jam in Manhattan and stumbled upon The Studio, where she encountered several great musicians including John Birdsall, a charming and versatile harmonica player and dedicated student of Jonathan Kalb (see jonathankalb.net). Well, John Birdsall brought in the wonderful and multi-talented Tom Pragliola on percussion. Tom has been kickin’around with different showcase bands in NYC over the years. He occasionally sat in on percussion with the Rolling Bones, and he formed and played with “The Jacks”, [whose vocalist, Sandra Langerstrom, now leads her own band in NY, “Sandstorm”]. After a brief stint with Gypsy Blue, Tom also drummed for “TJ and The Hellcats”, and most notably, has sat in occasionally with Jonathan Kalb. Well, Tom brought in Dennis McGann, an excellent and well known bass player around New York who often performs at Kenny’s Castaways. With the great Chris Botta now on lead guitar and some of the vocals, the Fountain of Blues plays a mixture of old fashioned blues standards (Billie Holliday, Koko Taylor, Howlin’ Wolfe, Little Walter), plus some upbeat modern blues/rock tunes (Etta James, Joanna Connor), as well as oldies but goodies. Aaron Comins, a trained and versatile musician, has recently joined us on keyboard. [Our kudos go to John Panessidi and TJ Hogarty (lead guitar) for some of the tracks included on our page, and to Eric Heilner (keyboard).] Judy touches on her innermost feelings when performing and enjoys using her wide vocal range, true to the Etta James style. We are constantly expanding our repertoire and love to keep our audience entertained. The Fountain of Blues has performed at the Clinton Cove Fesitval, The Bitter End, Kenny's Castaways, The Red Star, The Underscore, National Underground and Connolly's, and is currently in contact with other venues. All performances are posted.

Karmasutra is the creative musical outlet of the Pagano brothers. Patchogue natives, Craig, Jesse, and Noah Pagano started playing a variety of instruments in their early high school years and soon started jamming with a musical chemistry and intensity that has only grown over a decade of making music.

Karmasutra has headlined the Bradstock Festival, constantly tears the roof off of Fadeley’s Deli Pub, and has opened for the amazing acts of Bob Marley’s Wailers, Burning Spear, Third World and Luciano -- and the results are always the same; a vortex of energy and passion is created that has been electrifying fans for over ten years. Lately the hub of that vortex has been drummer Mark Rios. Mark is one of Long Island’s premier drummers who takes full advantage of Karmasutra's bold improvisational style.

In addition to that core, Karmasutra has recently added keys phenom Scotty Gropper and recent addition Chris P. Cauley on percussion. Karmasutra laid its musical foundations in Reggae and New Orleans’s Blues and Jazz, but that is only the seed by which truly vital and original American music has grown. Always being greater than the sum of its parts, Karmasutra is a musical force unique in the world of popular music.

Closing Down The Diner

Aging Baby Boomers now have a band whose music reflects their refusal to grow old gracefully. As pioneers of Senior Citizen Rock and Blue-Haired Blues, The Defibrillators poke good-natured fun at the foils and foibles of aging in their contagious blues-based rock originals. Billing themselves as “the World’s Oldest Boy Band”, The Defibs show they can kick it as energetically as (if not as high as) any of the young whippersnapper bands making the scene. Their high caliber of musicianship is offset only by their subtle theatrics during live performances. They have a rapidly growing fan base and receive regular air play across the nation from DJ's that have discovered their music. The Defibrillators have been performing together for more than eight years, and have become a mainstay at the Riverhead Blues Festival for the past six years, the South Bay Festival, the Cedar Beach Blues Festival, the Huntington Fall Festival and many more. Promoters have sought out The Defibrillators to open up for such legendary acts as The Zombies, Leon Russell, Susie Tyrell, Motown Sound and others. Television credits include a recent feature on WLIW Channel 21 on Newsday's Act II show and several public access TV shows, including auditions for NBC's America's Got Talent. Their eponymous CD has garnered rave reviews from The New York Times, Newsday, LI Press, Good Times, LI Entertainment, Aural Fix and other local press. All the good fun aside, The Defibrillators have rightfully been called Long Island's first Supergroup by the press. The members of the band are all highly accomplished musicians who have made their mark on the music scene.

Sonny has played with members of the band Orleans during their early years, and has performed with the Drifters, Chubby Checker, and Bobby Lewis as well as headlining his own acts. Sonny also plays the role of the Defibrillators main arranger and producer. Bob hosts the longest running Holiday Revue on Long Island. Bob was nominated for a LI Music Award for his solo album “Rollin’ Along”. On drums: Robert Langley was a session drummer for Shadow Morton. That’s Rob’s drumming on the Shangri-Las’ “Leader of the Pack” and “Walkin’ In the Rain”; Rob also revved that iconic motorcycle! On lead vocals and harmonica: Sonny Meadows has been nominated for a LI music awards for his recordings and performances, and presented his Woody Guthrie Tribute in 2000 and 2002 to sold-out audiences. His topical songwriting skill has brought him a lot of attention from the media, and it serves The Defibrillators well; Sonny is the primary songwriter for the band. On bass: Bobby “Buddy Boy” Cattrano recorded with Billy Joel on the “Cold Spring Harbor” album. Bob has kept the bottom moving with such well-known artists as Little Buster and The Scott Ross Blues Band. Bob is in demand as a session player for many Long Island artists. On lead and rhythm guitar: Jon “Dr. Max” Foreman brings his hot licks and voice over talents to all of The Defibrillators CD's and shows. at Dublin Pub

The following is the saga of a 'lil ol’ band from the North Shore who stomped about the NYC/LI club scene way back in the 80's 'n 90's. Many folks liked their live shows but couldn’t agree what to label them or the music they played. What do they sound like? What are their influences? Well, imagine a period of a few short years when The British Invasion, Motown, Phil Spector, The NY Downtown scene , Folk & Folk-Rock, The West Coast Scene (Surf & Psychedelic) and The Atlantic Records Soul Roster were all running red hot (and often served up on one station) – that’s what all the members of Doublespeak grew up with. So, I guess you could say that Doublespeak suffers from an “All-Good-Music Influence”.

Now, fast forward more years than they'd care to admit: Two years ago, with grown kids and quite different life scenarios behind them, the guys thought it was about time to get together to make a little noise and have a little fun. Hell, maybe a lot of fun. So, here they are – again. Great players, great original tunes. Not antique, not old – but rich and ripe and aged to perfection.

Hell Or High Water

"Joey 'thumbs' on the bass.....Jonny Walker BLACKK on the geeeetar....Hawnz (in the fire) on the heart stopping drums..and driving this audible wrecking ball..........Dave 'I'm cracking this goddamn CASE on the vocals!!"----j.d. of voodoodoll productions................................... The four of us have been making music together for the better part of the past 20 years. Recently, we'd had a reunion with our old band (Tension*), and just decided to keep playing together- but move in a different direction. We have always had an affinity for old, "roots of metal" bands such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, and decided to explore this side of our musical personalities- our upbringing, if you will. This past spring, we enlisted the help of our soul brother Dave Case (of Magnetic North and Exploder 1 fame). Dave is an extremely gifted musician with a proclivity towards all aspects of music. The first time we practiced with him, we knew he would be the perfect voice of our band. We're really lucky to have him on board. Currently, we're writing a ton of new music. .. GET READY FOR THE JETT BLACKK HEART ATTACK!!

Girl Was Gone

Back of Your Mind/Natural

Silent Generosity is a four piece alternative hard rock group based out of Long Island, New York.

The band was formed in 1998 by singer guitarist Ryan Parise, and drummer Jason Buswell.  In the beginning, Silent Generosity predominantly played a mixture of alternative, and punk tunes.  Over the years the band  has achieved a progressively harder sound as their music is began to reflect their hard rock, and metal influences.  The additions of Charles Shada on Bass in 2003, and Cory Skiseng on Guitar in 2008 round out the current lineup of the band.

The band recorded their first demo in 2006 which was noted for the tracks ‘On My Way’, ‘Disenchanted’ and ‘Break Me Down’.  This CD became popular among Long Island venues. Silent Generosity continued to enjoy an increasing local following as well as playing larger and larger venues; even being given the opportunity to open for Collective Soul.

In the Summer of 2006 They were asked to open for ‘Collective Soul’ in the Hampton’s after their win at a battle of the bands competition.

In late 2006, Silent Generosity went into the studio to record a full length album. The album featured the three songs from the ‘On My Way’ demo and was titled ‘Disenchanted’.

In late 2008, Silent Generosity released their second demo ‘Girl Was Gone’  as a limited release EP.  The demo featured the songs ‘Girl Was Gone’, ‘Hit and Run’, ‘She Said’,  and ‘Tragic End’.

Silent Generosity continues to grow as musicians.  With great determination, and more fire than ever, they are constantly working on new material.  The band continues to be a mainstay at many of  Long Island’s concert venues including Mulcahy’s, Crazy Donkey, and many others.  In addition they have been well recieved at several NYC venues.

2010 is shaping up to be another busy year for the band.  In May of 2010 the band was voted WRCN’s first ever “Island Rock Idol” after a competition featuring 100 local bands.  They will be appearing at the ‘Great South Bay Music Festival’ in July and open the 6th season of ‘Live in the Lobby’ at the Patchogue Theater for the Performing Arts in September.  The band is currently in studio finishing up their next album, as yet untitled, to be released through Paradiddle Records in late spring 2010.

Long Island based Singer-Songwriter Jay Scott has been polishing his songs over the past ten years through regular live performances from New York area to California.  In 2008 he released his first solo album on Paradiddle Records, Homegrown, recorded live in front of a packed audience at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts “Live in the Lobby” concert series. He is currently putting the finishing touches on his new EP, Life in a Hurry.

Having grown up playing upright bass and saxophone, Scott attended the Crane School of music in upstate New York for a year before returning home to Long Island.  In 2000 he started playing guitar, singing and writing songs.  Before long he found himself playing all over Long Island, New York City and a year in California as part of two successful bands -  Square1 and later Simple Citizen.  In 2004, he began to write and perform as a solo artist - sometimes alone and sometimes with a band. He resisted the temptation to form a cover band, though the opportunities to perform live on Long Island are much more numerous for cover bands than they are for original musicians.  “I have found that when I perform my own songs”, Scott said, “There is always at least one person who comes to talk with me after the set and offers enthusiastic comments about the songs and the sound.  This has encouraged me to continue on the path as an original artist”

During this time, Jay fell in love, got married, bought a house and by April 2010 was the father of three children.  While living the life of a family man and homeowner, and working two jobs, Jay Scott continues to write songs, rehearse, and perform at times that fit into his schedule. His audience continues to grow, with successful performances at venues from Manhattan to the Hamptons and air play at local radio stations in the northeast. His current band includes Chris P. Cauley on Drums, Dan Bolze on Bass and Sean Virag on lead guitar.
