Ourselves + Others is a pop-rock band from Houston, TX, composed of Jonathan Barrett (keys/vocals), Stephen King (drums), and Mateo Rodriguez (guitar). The trio’s sound is highlighted by Barrett’s impassioned and unique vocals, combining driving guitar riffs, punchy percussion, and sparkling synths to create a sweet yet dynamic sound. The group’s lyrics create optimism from places of insecurity; Ourselves + Others’ central message is one of spreading hope, empowerment, and a sense of community to their listeners. The band’s passion is to help people who feel lost or alone in their struggles find a way to fully express themselves.

The band originally formed as a cover band in 2016 but didn’t become fully active until the beginning of 2018. Since then, Ourselves + Others has impressed all around Texas with their interactive, high-energy live shows – including gigs with Nashville rockers Jet Black Alley Cat, Central California indie band Wee Beasties, Dallas pop-rock group Quiet Please, and Houston indie-rock trio No Rehearsal.

Ourselves + Others’ biggest influences include Twenty One Pilots, The 1975, and Walk the Moon. Their debut EP “Rudiment,” which CultureMap Houston’s Johnston Farrow said, “recalls the bright sounds of Grouplove and dramatics of Muse,” was released on July 6, 2018.
